Linear Access Control Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide

Linear access control installation in Miami typically runs $425 – $1,150 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a keypad, a telephone entry unit, or a full card reader with a control board. We stock Linear-compatible parts on our trucks, and most swaps take under two hours once we’re on site. The way most Miami owners discover a problem is simple: the keypad stops reading codes, the intercom goes silent, or the card reader flashes red after every swipe. One morning the gate just won’t open, and the keypad beeps but nothing moves.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear. What that means for you: we match the part to your existing system rather than pushing you toward a full upgrade unless the wiring or board actually calls for it. Dean Prescott has kept Linear entry systems running across Miami for years, from gated communities in Kendall to single-family driveways on Key Biscayne.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear makes access control under a few different series names, and the part has to match both the voltage and the protocol. The most common units we service in Miami are the AE-100, AE-200, and AE-500 telephone entry systems, the AP-5 and AK-11 keypads, and the IEI-style keypads Linear distributes. If you’ve got a slide or swing gate operator paired with a Linear entry panel, the control wiring is usually 24V AC, but some older brick-and-mortar keypad boxes run on 12V. Mismatching voltage is the fastest way to fry a new board.

To identify your part, look for a label on the inside of the enclosure or on the back of the keypad faceplate. The model number usually starts with “AE-” or “AP-“. We also see a lot of Linear PRO-Series access controllers on commercial gates in Miami, and those need a different wiring harness than the residential units. One compatibility gotcha: Linear’s older blue-faced keypads won’t swap directly onto the mounting plate of the newer gray-faced models, even though the wire count is the same. If you’re replacing an aftermarket board inside a Linear enclosure, we often recommend an OEM Linear board over a generic universal board because the relay timing is tuned to Linear gate operators. Generic boards work, but you’ll sometimes get a delay or a double-click that drives dogs and delivery drivers crazy.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts some codes but not others. This usually means the keypad membrane contacts are worn unevenly, or the board’s memory chip is dropping stored codes. Salt air near Miami’s coast accelerates corrosion on the contact traces.
  • The intercom buzzes or crackles when a visitor calls the house phone. That’s typically a failing audio transformer or a corroded phone-line connection inside the entry panel. We see this most often on systems within two miles of Biscayne Bay.
  • Card reader flashes red after every swipe, even with a working card. The reader’s Weigand output may be misaligned with the control board, or the reader itself has sustained water intrusion. Linear readers are weather-rated, but Miami’s summer downpours test every gasket.
  • The gate opens fine but won’t close when commanded from the entry panel. This points to a relay sticking in the open position on the Linear control board. Power-cycling sometimes buys a week, but the relay is on its way out.
  • You hear a humming sound from the enclosure but nothing engages. That’s usually a capacitor beginning to fail on the power supply side of the board. Left alone, it’ll eventually take the board with it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Miami, parts and labor, written before we start:

  • Standalone Linear keypad replacement (AP-5, AK-11, or equivalent): $425 – $620 installed
  • Telephone entry system replacement (AE-100/AE-200 class): $750 – $1,150 installed
  • Card reader add-on or swap (Linear PRX-1 or similar): $350 – $500 per reader
  • Control board replacement inside an existing enclosure: $390 – $680, depending on relay count and whether we need to re-wire the input triggers

The range depends on the condition of your existing wiring, whether the mounting enclosure needs a new gasket or weather seal, and how far the gate motor is from the entry panel. Every price includes the part, the labor, a written Kingswell Guarantee, and cleanup of the work area. You’ll know the total before we touch a screwdriver. No surprise line items after the fact.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe amount of diagnosis you can do. Check whether the keypad has power (the backlight should respond), verify that the gate operator itself works using its manual controls, and look for obvious water stains or ant trails inside the enclosure. Ants love Linear keypads in Miami. They short contacts and leave behind residue that looks like coffee grounds. You can clean that.

What you shouldn’t do is open a powered entry panel and start probing wires. Linear systems carry 12 – 24V, which won’t shock you, but a short across the wrong two terminals can destroy the board you’re trying to save. And the gate operator side carries line voltage, which absolutely will hurt you. If the panel is still under load from the operator, leave the cover on and call us. Tell me what it’s doing and I’ll tell you what it needs – usually before I even pull out a wrench.

Call (850) 409-8032 and we’ll walk you through a quick phone diagnosis. If it’s a simple part swap, we can often have a background-checked, uniformed technician at your Miami property the same day.
