DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Miami Owner’s Guide

Most DoorKing keypad and intercom repairs in Miami run between $185 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the circuit board, or the entire unit. We keep DoorKing-compatible keypads, intercom boards, and wiring harnesses stocked, so we can usually get you squared away the same day. The typical call starts with “the keypad beeps but the gate won’t open” or “the intercom sounds like it’s underwater” and turns out to be corrosion on the board or a dead switch membrane.

Here’s the thing we see all over Miami: salt air and humidity chew through entry panels faster than just about anywhere else. A keypad that lasted eight years in Phoenix might give you five here before the buttons stop registering. The good news is DoorKing parts are modular, so we rarely have to replace the whole system. We isolate the failed piece, show you the price in writing, and fix it.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

We service the full range of DoorKing access control gear. The most common units we see in Miami are the 1800-series and 1830-series telephone entry systems, the 1515 and 1516 keypads, and the 1812 intercom systems. We also work on the 9050 slide gate operators with integrated keypads, though those need a different troubleshooting approach since the keypad is wired through the operator board rather than as a standalone unit.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of owners: DoorKing has revised the wiring pinouts on their keypads twice in the last ten years. A keypad labeled for the 1803 series might not talk to the 1812 intercom board without a wiring adapter, even though the plug looks identical. That’s one reason we always check the model and revision number, not just the part name, before matching a replacement. You’ll find the model number on a silver sticker inside the housing, and the revision code is usually the last two characters of the part number.

When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, we’re straightforward about it. DoorKing’s own keypads are sealed better against humidity than most of the aftermarket clones, so if your panel gets direct sun on a Brickell Avenue gate or sits close to salt spray in Coconut Grove, we recommend staying with OEM. For interior intercom boards, though, a quality aftermarket replacement often saves you 30 percent with no practical difference in lifespan. We stock both and tell you the real cost difference so you can decide.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • Buttons need to be pressed hard or multiple times. This is usually the membrane switch wearing out. The carbon contact under the rubber deteriorates, especially in Miami’s humidity, and the keypad stops registering a clean press. A new keypad face fixes it in about 40 minutes.
  • The intercom audio crackles, hums, or cuts out during conversation. Nine times out of ten this is corrosion on the audio board or a loose ground wire. The salt air near the water accelerates this. Replacing the board or re-terminating the wire usually restores clear audio.
  • The keypad beeps but the gate won’t move. This tells us the keypad is working and the problem is downstream: a relay, a wiring fault, or a blown fuse on the operator board. We trace the signal path so we’re not guessing at your expense.
  • Some numbers work and others don’t. A failing membrane often loses specific keys first, usually the ones used most (your code digits). It looks like a programming problem but it’s almost always physical wear on the switch layer.
  • The unit works in the morning but not in the afternoon. That’s a heat-expansion problem: solder joints or ribbon cables lose contact as the enclosure heats up in the Miami sun. It’s a board-level repair or replacement, not something you can fix with a settings change.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we charge in Miami for the most common DoorKing keypad and intercom repairs. These are installed prices, parts and labor together, and we put the number in writing before we touch a single wire:

  • Keypad membrane or keypad face replacement: $185 – $260
  • Intercom audio board replacement: $240 – $340
  • Full keypad unit replacement (weather-sealed, OEM): $320 – $420
  • Wiring harness replacement or re-termination: $120 – $200

The range depends on access (how hard the panel is to reach), whether it’s a standalone keypad or integrated into an intercom, and whether we’re using OEM or quality aftermarket parts. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the fix fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. Written on the invoice, not verbal.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things safely before calling: confirm the circuit breaker for the gate hasn’t tripped, make sure the keypad face isn’t physically cracked (water getting inside causes fast failures), and see if the intercom handset or master station inside the house still works. If the indoor station is fine but the outdoor keypad is dead, that narrows the problem to the outdoor unit and its wiring.

What we don’t recommend is opening the keypad housing and testing the board yourself. DoorKing units run on low voltage, but miswiring a replacement board can send voltage back into the operator and damage a much more expensive component. We have repaired more than one gate where a well-meaning owner swapped a keypad, crossed two wires, and fried the relay on a $900 operator board. If you’re even a little unsure, call us at (850) 409-8032. Dean Prescott will tell you what it’s doing and we’ll tell you what it needs, usually before we even pull out a wrench.
