Linear keypad and intercom repair in Miami typically runs $185 – $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the control board behind it, or the intercom speaker and microphone assembly. Most repairs are done same-day because our trucks carry the common Linear replacement parts for the Miami market. You’ll usually know it’s failing when the keypad still lights up but won’t send the open signal, or when you can hear static on the intercom but the voice is gone.
In Miami, we see a pattern with these Linear systems. The keypad membrane cracks first from sun exposure and salt air, then the board behind it corrodes, then the open signal stops entirely. The intercom usually fails the same way a car stereo does in this climate: the speaker foam rots, and the microphone element gets fouled by humidity. It’s rarely the wiring. It’s almost always the component facing the weather.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
We work on the full Linear access-control line, but in Miami you’re most likely to have an AK-11, AK-15, or AK-21 keypad mounted at the driveway, paired with an AE-100, AE-500, or AE-2000 telephone entry/intercom panel at the gate or pedestrian door. The flat-faced AK-15 is the one we see most on Coral Gables driveways and Brickell building entries, simply because there are thousands of them installed across the city.
Here’s what matters for compatibility: Linear keypads wire to the operator’s “open” input differently by model, and the AK-11 and AK-21 use different screw spacing on the mounting plate. We measure the old unit before we order anything, because a keypad that looks identical in a photo may not match the backplate you already have drilled into your wall. When we can, we install an OEM Linear part. When the OEM part is discontinued or backordered, we offer a Speco or Essex aftermarket equivalent that matches the wiring and the weather rating. Neither gets installed without your sign-off on price first.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but won’t trigger the gate. The membrane is sending the keystroke, but the relay on the control board has burned out or the terminals have corroded. This is the most common failure in Miami’s humidity, and it’s a board-level repair, not a wiring repair.
- Some buttons work, others don’t. The keys are arranged in a grid under the membrane, and when one row or column stops responding, that tells us the trace on the circuit board has failed. It usually happens to the “open” and “call” buttons first, because they’re used the most.
- Intercom rings but voice is garbled or absent. The speaker cone has degraded from moisture. We find this on gate intercoms that face east and catch the morning rain, and on pedestal mounts that get splashed by irrigation heads. The fix is a new speaker and often a new microphone element at the same time.
- Call button works but the visitor can’t hear you. That’s almost always the microphone. On Linear entry panels, the mic element sits behind a small pinhole that clogs with pollen and salt residue in Miami. We can clean it, but replacement is usually the answer that lasts.
- Keypad works at night but not in direct sun. The LCD or LED display and the membrane are heat-sensitive. By 2:00 p.m. in a Miami summer, the surface temperature of a black keypad face can hit 145 degrees, and the internal contrast or the membrane’s conductivity drops out. If it works every morning and dies every afternoon, the part is heat-failing.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what you should expect to pay in Miami for Linear keypad and intercom repair, parts and labor:
- Keypad membrane or button replacement: $185 – $260
- Keypad control board replacement (relay or trace failure): $240 – $340
- Intercom speaker and microphone replacement: $220 – $320
- Full keypad + intercom replacement with new weather seal: $340 – $420
What drives the range is the specific model, how much of the existing wiring we can reuse, and whether we’re working at the gate or at a second entry point like a pedestrian door. Every price is written down before we start. You agree to the number, then we do the work. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair for 365 days, printed on your invoice. If that Linear part fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s the reason we don’t need to upsell you on anything.
DIY or Call Us?
If your Linear keypad is working sometimes, check the obvious first: tighten the wire connections, clear the pinhole mic opening with a dry toothbrush, and make sure the mounting screws haven’t let moisture behind the faceplate. Those are safe checks. What we’d warn you away from is opening the keypad housing to replace the board yourself while the system is live. These units run low voltage, but the gate operator they connect to does not, and the “open” terminal can carry enough current to bite when the operator cycles. If you’re not certain which wire is which, stop. Call us.
And if you’re mid-repair and the gate opens on you while your hand is in the panel, that’s a real risk on a mis-wired Linear input. Our techs do this every day, and they still lock out the operator before opening the panel. For a repair that runs under $400, it’s not worth the injury or the burned board. Call (850) 409-8032 and we’ll be out with the right Linear part. Dean Prescott has been doing this long enough to know that tell me what it’s doing and I’ll tell you what it needs, usually before I even pull out a wrench.
FAQs
A Linear keypad installed on a Miami driveway typically lasts 5 – 8 years before the membrane or board fails, and the intercom speaker usually gives out in 4 – 6 years due to humidity and heat. Coastal properties with direct salt exposure tend to fall at the shorter end of that range. Call (850) 409-8032 for a free estimate if yours is acting up.
Yes, when the failure is on the board we can often replace the relay, diode, or terminal instead of the whole keypad, which cuts the cost. When the membrane itself has cracks, repair isn’t worth it, and we’ll tell you that straight before you spend a dollar.
A typical Linear keypad or intercom replacement in Miami takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half on site, including mounting, wiring, testing the open signal, and sealing the edge against weather. We give you a real arrival window before we come, and we clean up the old hardware and wiring scraps before we leave.
We stock the most common Linear keypads, membranes, boards, speakers, and microphones on our Miami trucks, plus compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. We’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with Linear, which means we can offer the aftermarket equivalent when it makes sense and the OEM part when it doesn’t.
